The information on these pages comes from over 15 plus years of helping over 1,000 customers, talking with fence installers, and fence manufacturer tips.
2) Select a Brand and Style
You can choose the fence style you like, and immediately see the brands that carry that style. Browse our Residential Aluminum Fence page to shop by fence style and brand. You can then Compare Fence Brands to find the brand that best fits your project.
Click one of the links under Fence Materials in the left navigation to view all fence styles. The categories are separated by the type of fence you need. If you are looking for a standard fence around your home, then click on Residential Aluminum Fence. Once you are on the category pages – click on the brand or fence style to read all the information about the fence panel.
3) Draw Your Fence Layout On Paper
Draw your fence lines marking the locations of gates, and all fence run measurements in feet. Making a drawing of your fence project will help you figure out how many panels and the type of posts you will need.
4) Determine the Quantity of Fence Panels, Posts, and Gates
Take the fence run measurement in feet and divide it by 6, as all of our residential aluminum fence panels come in 6 foot widths. Most commercial and industrial grade panels come in 6 and 8 foot widths. The fence panels slot into pre-cut holes in the posts and almost touch on the inside of the post, so the posts don’t add anything to the measurements. Once you divide the fence run by 6, that is the number of fence panels you will need in that run. It is better to round up to make sure you have enough materials to finish your project. You can use any extra pickets as spare parts. If there are no gates in your fence run, subtract 1 from the quantity of fence panels, that is the number of line posts you will need. Example: 24 feet ÷ 6 = 4 panels and 3 line posts. If you have a gate in the fence run, subtract the gate width from the fence run, then divide by 6. Example: 24 feet – 4 foot gate = 20 feet ÷ 6 = 3.3 panels. Round up to have 4 panels to make sure you have enough material. You can trim down fence panels to fit your fence runs. If you have an angle other than 90 degrees, end the fence run with an end post, then use angle brackets on the blank side, you can then angle the fence panel however you like. Read our page on Aluminum Fence Posts that explains how each post is used in a fence run.
