Top Rail Styles of Fence Brands

Some fence brands have a different top rail style compared to the others. For example, Onguard and Elite fences and gates have a beveled top rail. This beveled rail design has a more decorative appearance and can shed water. Specrail fences have a squared rail design.

The space from the top of the top rail to the top of the second rail varies by manufacturer. Here is a list of horizontal rail spacing for each aluminum fence brand:

Matching the Grade of Aluminum Fence

Once you have determined that your fence matches a brand carried on FenceTown, you must match the grade of the fence. For example, Onguard has residential and commercial grade fence panels and posts. Ultra has residential, commercial, and industrial grade fence panels and posts. The best way to determine the grade of the fence is by measuring the horizontal rails and pickets.

Residential Grade Fence:
Pickets are 5/8 inch sq. x .050 inch thick
Rail Topwalls are 1-1/8 inch x .062 inch thick.
Rail Sidewalls are 1 inch x .080 inch thick.
Picket spacing is 3 13/16 inches.
Holds 350 pounds

Commercial Grade Fence:
Pickets are 3/4 inch sq. x .055 inch thick
Rail Topwalls are 1-3/8 inch x .065 inch thick.
Rail Sidewalls are 1-1/4 inch x .090 inch thick.
Picket spacing is 3-5/8 inches.
Holds 500 pounds

Industrial Grade Fence:
Pickets are 1 inch sq. x .065 inch thick
Rail Topwalls are 1.250 inch x .070 inch thick.
Rail Sidewalls are 1.625 inch x .100 inch thick.

Percentage Material Price Difference Between Brands:

Since Onguard has the lowest material cost, we will base the increase in the cost percentage on the Onguard brand. Onguard materials are made overseas and then assembled in the USA. Ultra and Elite, like most USA fence brands, have the raw aluminum shipped to the US, where it’s melted down and made into the rails and pickets. Then, their fence is powder coated and assembled. The thickness and quality of materials are the same for all brands.

Onguard to Elite:    Elite costs approximately 25% more than Onguard
Onguard to Ultra:   Ultra costs approximately 15% more than Onguard

Each brand has different panel styling. Onguard, Ultra, and Elite have visible screws on one side of the panels. All fence panels can rack at an angle to some degree. Our brands can make panels rack a little more than their standard racking, called double or triple punching. Onguard, Ultra, and Elite have a beveled edge to their horizontal rails.

Common Fence Terms:

Delivery Fee: Trucking companies charge a fee to deliver to a residential address. They will waive this fee if you provide a business shipping address with a loading dock. Delivery charges are separate from shipping charges. If your order qualifies for free shipping, there is generally a residential delivery charge on every order.

Lift Gate: Your aluminum fence order arrives on a pallet with shrink wrapped boxes. The driver will move the pallet to the back of the truck onto a lift gate. The pallet will be lowered to the ground and left for the customer to unwrap.

Base Mounts: To mount to a hard surface such as concrete or a deck. Standard base mounts will require the customer to cut and insert the posts into the base mount. Then use the provided screws to secure the base mount to the post. Some brands offer welded base mounts where the post is pre-cut, and the manufacturer welds the base mount on the post for added strength. Per each manufacturer, stand-alone base mounts can be used for a fence up to 48 inches tall, and welded base mounts up to 57 inches tall fence panels.

Fence Racking refers to the vertical angle a fence section can adjust when the ground follows a slope. Most brands also offer double or triple punching options, which allow the fence panels to rack even more.

Quality: All FenceTown brands are generally the same in quality. All brands are powder coated and have the same picket and rail thickness. Beware of other online and store bought fence products. Their panels and posts might not be as thick-walled as FenceTown products.

Fence posts are two feet extra in length to put into the ground. Gates come with self-closing hinges, and most brands offer a free latch. Gate latches and hinges do not come with Ultra gates.
